Belgium, the theatre of the boom around page 562, will become in the next few years the center of WWI, the center of discussion. Mason & Dixon portrayed used as a theatre the areas round which the American civil war was ‘acted’. It is a common theme in Pynchon’s work to deal with this sort of study of the underlying factors that are about to cause the catastrophe to happen.
