The science of this was done extensively by Lord Rayleigh (who was mentioned earlier in Against the Day) in the first and second editions of The Theory of Sound (1880 to 1895). By the Way the first edition of The Theory of Sound was written by Rayleigh on top of a cruise ship on the Nile.
