“a strange chemical relation between these nitro explosives and the human heart”.

Nitroglycerin used in dynamite is also used as a medicine against angina (due to the NO released in the blood. Someone got the Nobel price in medicine a couple of years back on the NO research. What a strange irony.

Do you reckon Pynchon talks about dynamite so much having Alfred Nobel at the back of his mind? Is this some sort of mockery of the book business, the critics, the prizes and all relating to it?

Incidentally, nitroglycerin is also used on the tip of some condoms for erection purposes. Another type of explosion there (but not really mentioned yet in the book).
