Light and Change

Filed under: Uncategorized — basileios @ 4:40 pm

I mentioned a couple of days ago the themes of light and change that are so prominent in Against the Day. Actually the two are connected now that I think about it. Light was the element which suffered the most important change in scientist’s and ‘commoners’ minds. Starting as a wave, goping through particle and then back tow wave, it received the status of an electromagnetic wave at the end of the 19th century to turn into a dual object of power at the turn of the century both through the duality brought by its photon/wave essence and the absolute speed that was brought by special relativity. Light is the key object of change in the minds of scientists at the time, it explodes everything (and implodes everything back to a point again).
