I am somehow relieved. He must be mocking the whole spiritual theme. Typical Pynchon joke though: ‘How many Chinese in South Dakota’.

  1. Pynchon joke, perhaps. When I read that line, the first thing that came to my mind was the Chinese part of town that plays a significant part in HBO’s Deadwood (in South Dakota, natch). Maybe Pynchon is a fan?

  2. I flashed on Deadwood more’n e few times whilst reading the western parts of AGD. He even uses some of the same slang terms that I learned from that show like “squareheads”. But I rather think that, regardless of whether he’s a fan of the show and I imagine he might be, he got his ideas from some of the same primary sources that the folks of Deadwood got theirs.
And I don’t know that the spiritual thing is full-on mockery, at least not any more than anything else that’s mocked. It’s sort of the converse of or even the motivation behind most of the science in the book. (To we non-mathematicians it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference.)
