Scientists vs Reality

“When human tragedies happen, it always seems as if scientists and mathematicians can meet the situation more calmly than others. But its as likely to be a form of escaping reality, and sooner or later comes the payback.”

This is more or less a summary of the Roger Mexico story in Gravity’s Rainbow. This strikes very close to home for comfort.
